Warwick Schools and our Commitment as a Community
Education is a huge component of The Monarch Village Pollinator Project. Students in grades K-12 have been involved in a wide variety of pollinator activities since the fall of 2023. From Monarch butterflies to bees, moths, bats, birds, flies and beyond, students have created games, songs, artwork, displays, and educational lessons.
In the fall of 2023/Spring 2024, WVHS students from Land Food & People and Cosmetology classes created lesson plans/activities for Park Avenue and Sanfordville Elementary School students in what became wonderful student led teaching opportunities for teenagers to connect with younger children. From games to artwork and the planting of native pollinator plants under each of the school signs, students enjoyed digging in the dirt..
On June 1, 2024, Warwick celebrated it's very first Monarch Village Festival with over 1,000 displays of student pollinator related artwork, stories, poems and songs written and sung by 4th graders. Join us on June 21st for the 2025 Monarch Village Festival at Park Ave Elementary.

The future is in our hands
According to World Wildlife Fund reports,
the eastern migratory monarch population shrunk by
more than 80 percent during the last three decades.
Planting and protecting milkweed (the only plant Monarch
Butterflies lay their eggs on and the sole source of food
the caterpillars eat) can have a significant impact on
Monarch populations and contribute to their recovery.
Planting native nectar-producing plants and avoiding the
use of pesticides and herbicides can also increase the
likelihood of this iconic butterflies survival.
The Village of Warwick, NY became designated as the
very First New York State Monarch Village in an effort to
bring about a collaborative movement to protect these
beautiful creatures and their habitats. With this initiative,
countless people from all ages and walks of life have
volunteered their time and energy to create and protect
pollinator areas and natural habitats throughout our town.
We invite you to join us....

1
THERE IS ONLY 1 FOOD SOURCE FOR MONARCH LARVAE OR CATERPILLARS TO EAT
While adult Monarchs feed on nectar from flowers, the larvae or caterpillars only feed on one plant--the Milkweed Plant.
4 - 8
MONARCH BUTTERFLIES LIVE 4-8 WEEKS ON AVERAGE DURING MIGRATION.
Wow! So it will be their descendants—most likely their great-great-grandchildren—that will reach the northern states and complete this epic journey.
2
MONARCH BUTTERLIES ARE THE ONLY BUTTERFLY TO COMPLETE A 2-WAY MIGRATION
During the summer monarchs thrive in North America wherever they find delicious Milkweed. In the Fall, monarch butterflies migrate south to Central Mexico where there are so many that you can hear the sound of their wings.
3,000
3,000 MILES IS THE DISTANCE THAT MONARCH BUTTERFLIES HAVE TO MIGRATE SOUTHBOUND TO MEXICO.
Weighing less than half a gram, these delicate creatures travel nearly three thousand miles from the northern US and southern Canada to their overwintering destination in the oyamel fir forests of central Mexico.
